Power over Ethernet (PoE) - 802.3af
Most network devices require power - whether core infrastructure devices such as network switches and routers, or some of the more peripheral components such as IP telephones, Web Cams, Access Points, PDAs etc...
Power delivery to such devices is now possible via a single physical data network connection to the device (nominally RJ45), which means not having to rely upon separate, expensive and very inflexible mains power. IP telephones have really pushed this requirement forward, which has recently seen the ratification of the supporting power via ethernet standard - 802.3af. Be careful when looking to adopt and deploy power in this way, not all power over ethernet solutions follow the 802.3af standard.
