A newer & competitive standard to H.323, SIP is used for 'session' signalling and for the transmission of voice and other real time media. Developed by the IETF in the mid 1990s (iptel Working Group), SIP is not a suite of standards like H.323 and thus seen by many as a more flexible, lightweight and development friendly standard. Expected to replace H.323 in many instances over the next few years, SIP is already front running numerous new and next generation solution areas such as the 3GPP, location services and Instant Messaging (IM).
